New Apple stuff

No, not for me. I wish.

Steve Jobs gave his keynote at Macworld today. There were some small additions like a new iLife and a small 10.4 upgrade, but the biggest thing is the new Powerbook. Er, MacBook Pro. Immediate reaction: the name sucks. Later reaction: I want. Using a dual core chip and 4.5 times faster than Powerbooks of today, and a built in iSight camera. I'm almost willing to forgive Apple for switching to Intel chips. My only gripe is that they should have gone with AMD...

Too bad they're $1999 USD ($2299 CAN). I want one so badly...

4.5 times faster? Yeah, right. Never trust computer manufacturer benchmarks. They always, always use tests that are optimized on their processor, and unoptimized on the competition's processor (or, in this case, their old processor).

More info here.

And, quite frankly, I don't really want one yet. First of all, only the 15-inch model is out (and, although I'd love a 15-inch, I'd go for the much cheaper 12-inch). And second, most of my programs probably wouldn't run on it. I know they've got Rosetta which is supposed to make old stuff work on it, but they've said that Final Cut, Aperture, and Logic (all their professional products) won't run on it. This makes me really wonder whether or not many of my applications will work, especially since you'd think the last generation of Apple products were made with the Intel transition in mind.

And I'm skeptical of how well Rosetta works in the first place... I mean, even my NES emulator lags on my 800MHz G4. If my computer can't emulate an 18-year-old system, I question how well it can emulate a processor that's only 1 or 2 years old. Of course, they claim it doesn't use emulation, but I'm still really skeptical of how well it works.
