It's time for Matt's Cooking Epiphanies again! For those that said "Tool Time", you're unfortunately wrong, but you get a consolation prize redeemable until five seconds after you read this message.
Anyway, epiphany #3: The taste of the food that you have just cooked is proportional to the number of dishes you'll have to do afterwards. I made pasta and made the sauce mostly myself (the tomato sauce was store bought and spiced already, but other than that, it was all me), and then realized just how much needed to be cleaned up afterwards. Oh, well. Such is life.
Epiphany #4: You can drain pasta without a strainer. After unsuccessfully trying to find ours, I was trying to find some way to drain spaghetti and lo and behold, it's possible. I found the strainer later that night, so it was all in vain, but it's still cool to know.
Work's been interesting. I dunno how much I can say due to me finding out a few weeks ago that I had to sign some kind of an NDA, but right now the program I'm working on is looking mighty spiffy in several ways. I'm also becoming more independent on the job and trying to ask for help a lot less, and so far I've been surviving.

Actually, my first thoughts were "either tool time or 8 minutes after pi". Where's my prize?
As for draining pasta, just hold the lid on with a small gap at the edge (that will allow water out but not pasta), and dump it over the sink. Be careful, though, because sometimes the pasta can flop over, and if it catches you off-guard, you'll have a sink full of pasta.
