I was having mouse troubles a while ago (my scroll ball on my Mighty Mouse wouldn't scroll down anymore due to obsessive use, and I used it a lot), so I splurged a little bit and bought a new mouse. After realizing that the old mouse didn't work perfectly after only 8 months, I set out to try to find something different. After over an hour of browsing a Future Shop and a Staples trying to find just the right fit for me (if I'm splurging on a mouse, I had better pick a good one for my hand) and I finally came up with something I liked.
I bought a Logitech MX 400. I've never really used a mouse that has more than three useful buttons before, so I thought it would be interesting to try. From what I was looking at, this mouse gave me the best balance of a good fit on my hand and a decent price (believe me, there was a really nice gaming mouse for about $90 that felt great on my hand, but I just can't justify spending that much on a freaking mouse). I really like the feel of it. It's so comfortable on my hand compared to the Apple one I had and it's a lot easier to click with as well, especially since you don't go accidentally tapping the middle button. It's got two buttons on the side (currently mapped to Back and Forward on the web browser, but there may be better uses), and the scroll wheel also tilts left and right (I'm using it for Spaces right now to go left and right between them, and it's pretty useful), and the middle click is on Exposé, and while it's a bit tricky to middle click without the wheel going left or right, I can get used to it eventually, I think.
My only regret? Logitech's website sells it for fifty bucks. I got it for sixty, but the fifty may not include shipping.
Anyway, it's a great mouse. If you ever feel like splurging on a piece of tech that most people use every day, I'd recommend this. It's not too expensive if you want something more than just a simple three button mouse.
And yes, I'm completely aware that I wrote an entire post about a mouse. I know that gives plenty of nerd points, but hey, might as well go for a high score or something. :P

I never assign the middle-click. A lot of programs have default actions for a middle-click anyways. The most obvious example I can think of is opening a link in a new tab in Firefox (same thing as a cmd-click). Of course, it also does the annoying scrolling thing in Firefox,
Then again, I'm currently on a Logitech MX500 which has 5 extra buttons (in addition to the middle-click), and I don't have any of the extra buttons assigned anyways. Truth is, other than default middle-click actions, I never use them - I just end up using keyboard shortcuts for things like exposé, and to my surprise I never use Spaces.
Oh yeah, and you've once again fallen into the habit of not putting titles on your posts, which makes it difficult for people like me who read from iGoogle, with only the 2 most recent shown. Maybe you can write an Applescript to make one of those buttons "assign post title"
I don't know if OSX has a middle click functionality to it at all (unlike Windows, though you use OSX as well), so that's why I just put it on something else. I command click most of the time when I want a new tab anyway.
I think the 500 was one of the ones I was looking at, and I think I didn't pick it just because the extra buttons left like they were in weird places or something. Or maybe I was just too picky about how it felt on my hand.
I find Spaces to be useful myself, but on the other hand, I also have more applications open at all times than you probably do (I usually have MSN, Skype, Mailplane (Gmail minus the browser), and Vienna (my RSS reader), and sometimes iTunes at the same time, and to keep it in one screen (especially when there's a web browser or other stuff) feels really cluttered. So I separate the stuff, and It's been fairly useful.
Yeah, I'm aware of the lack of titles, And it's really just a matter of I can't think of titles on the spot. I'm aware a kitten dies every time I forget, but I can never think of them quickly enough and I usually think "It can't be that bad, can it?" when I know I should do something about it.
